Pakistani Troops on High Alert Along Afghan Border as Clashes Escalate & Trade Halts

Pakistan Puts Forces on High Alert at Afghan Border amid Deadly Clashes and Trade Freeze

Pakistan has placed its military on heightened alert along the Afghanistan border, following a weekend of intense clashes and the suspension of cross-border trade.

Early reports indicate that the fighting began late Saturday night, marking one of the fiercest confrontations between Islamabad and Kabul since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.  Pakistan closed all border crossings along its 2,600-kilometer frontier, convoying goods and traders to a standstill on both sides.

According to Pakistani officials, 23 soldiers were killed in the exchanges; Afghan authorities, however, claim 58 Pakistani fatalities.  Pakistan insists it responded with force, alleging heavy losses inflicted on Taliban and allied forces.

The closure of border crossings has disrupted essential trade—Pakistan is a major supplier of food and goods to landlocked Afghanistan.  The strain is particularly acute in border regions, where economic livelihoods depend heavily on cross-border commerce. Reuters

Diplomatic sources suggest that mediation efforts are underway, with regional powers urging restraint.  Meanwhile, Islamabad has made it clear that any provocation would be met with a firm defense. Al Jazeera
