Cash App Agrees to $12.5M Settlement, Offers Up to $147 per Affected User
Block Inc., the parent company of Cash App, has reached a $12.5 million settlement in a class action lawsuit alleging that the app sent unsolicited promotional referral texts to users without their consent.
The suit, filed in Washington state (Bottoms v. Block Inc.), claims that Cash App’s “Invite Friends” feature incentivized users to send prewritten texts to their contacts, some of whom had never consented to receive such messages.

The messages allegedly violated Washington’s Commercial Electronic Mail Act (CEMA) and the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).
Under the proposed settlement, individuals who received one or more of these referral texts between November 14, 2019 and August 7, 2025, while residing in Washington state and without providing prior consent, may be eligible for compensation. The estimated payout per person ranges from $88 to $147, depending on the number of valid claims submitted.
The settlement has received preliminary court approval as of July 2025, and the final approval hearing is scheduled for December 2, 2025. Claimants must file their forms by October 27, 2025 to participate.
It’s important to note that Cash App denies any wrongdoing in the case, but opted for settlement to avoid protracted litigation.
