In February 2008 elections, he was elected Member of Assembly for the fifth time on the ticket of People's Party from Multan. After these elections, initially Yusuf Raza Gilani was not going to be made a strong candidate for the Prime Ministership and Ahmed Mukhtar's name was in the news as a possible candidate from Punjab.
However, Pakistan People's Party nominated him as the new Prime Minister of the country on March 22, 2008. A day after that, on March 24, the newly elected National Assembly elected Yousaf Raza Gilani as the new Leader of the House and on March 26, he took the oath of office and he held this position for four years, one month and one day.
He was the first Prime Minister from Saraiki region after Balkh Sher Mazari, while earlier Balkh Sher Mazari from Saraiki belt became caretaker Prime Minister.
During the four-year tenure of power, Yusuf Raza Gilani's government and the country's judiciary continued to be in tension over the issue of writing a letter to the Swiss authorities to open cases against the then President Asif Ali Zardari, and this Supreme Court's 'order' was overruled by them. It also became the reason for the end of power.
During his incapacity, he remained largely aloof from active politics, but members of his family appeared as candidates in the elections. He participated in the 2018 election after the disqualification period ended. In Multan, he lost from NA 158 to Muhammad Ibrahim Khan of PTI.
The Election Commission rejected the objections raised by the ruling party while accepting Gilani's nomination papers for the 2021 Senate elections.
The victory of Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in the upper house heralded the great success of Pakistan's political history and PPP.
However, on the other hand, the opposition nominated him as the candidate for the chairmanship of the Senate. 7 votes were rejected in the largest house of the Senate, which turned into victory of Yousaf Raza Gilani. Thus again the opposition was successful in the Senate of Pakistan (Upper House). The success of the party is the continuation of the 54th foundation day of Pakistan People's Party, which is engaged in great efforts for the success of the grand rally in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
