In 1967, Bhutto broke away from Ayub Khan's government and founded the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which became one of the major political parties in Pakistan. After the 1970 general elections, the PPP emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly of Pakistan, and Bhutto became the country's first civilian martial law administrator, taking charge of the country as the President of Pakistan.

In 1973, Bhutto became the Prime Minister of Pakistan, and his government focused on social reforms and economic development. He initiated a number of measures aimed at improving the conditions of the poor and the working classes. Bhutto also played a key role in the founding of the Islamic Conference, an international organization of Muslim countries.

However, Bhutto's government was plagued by charges of corruption and authoritarianism. Bhutto was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of a political opponent. He was tried and sentenced to death in 1979, and was executed by hanging on April 4, 1979. His execution was widely criticized both within Pakistan and internationally, and he remains a controversial figure in Pakistani politics to this day.
